Capital, with its conditions attached¶
We compare what a program pays for, when value arrives, what must be repaid and whether ownership changes. The label “equity-free” alone answers too little.
Six mechanisms¶
A grant is conditional public or philanthropic support. A reimbursement pays against approved expenditure, often after spending. A voucher or credit can offset only eligible services. A loan must be repaid. A tax benefit changes a tax calculation. Equity investment exchanges capital for ownership or related contractual rights.
A competition may combine prizes, services and investment introductions, each with separate conditions. A subsidized desk is an in-kind benefit, not unrestricted cash. A government-backed fund is still an investment vehicle when it takes equity. An interest-free loan remains debt.
Build a layered funding plan¶
Before registration, check whether team-level vouchers, university proof-of-concept support or competition routes accept the actual applicant. After incorporation, compare the company’s district and activity with public calls. For a prototype, prioritize real lab, compute or customer needs. For expansion, match the amount and timing to investor or bank criteria.
We never add overlapping headline awards into a promised total. Programs can exclude duplicated spending, restrict related suppliers, require local operations, demand matching funds or pay only after acceptance. A company needs working capital for costs that arrive before reimbursement.
Compare the real cost¶
For public support, compare eligible expense period, matching ratio, audit cost, tax treatment, reporting and clawback. For equity, compare valuation, ownership, liquidation preference, board rights, follow-on rights and exit terms. For debt, compare principal, interest, fees, guarantee or collateral, repayment schedule and default obligations.
For cloud benefits, check account region, supported services, expiry, existing credits and overage billing. China-region and global offers may use different operators and accounts. Free membership in a technology ecosystem does not guarantee hardware supply, credits or investment.
